France #6: Abbaye de Fontenay

A trip to the beautiful Abbaye de Fontenay, which was my main touristic stop-off on my way back from Grenoble to London (as recommended by some friends who know France very well, and said they would take nearly a week to do the same journey that I was doing in a day).

It was certainly beautiful. Like visiting somewhere like Fountains Abbey but not ruined. I loved the austereness of the buildings, inside and out, without any decoration at all.

The church.

The cloisters.

The dormitory.

The scribing room.

This was the most advanced forge in Europe at the time of its construction.

Wheel to power the forge hammer.

Me in the mornings.
