Meet Missy, Archie, Dinky, and Jane.
I caught them in Low Row, about to climb up and over the hills to Arkengarthdale, where they would then carry on over the hills to Bowes where they would camp for the night.
Missy is the horse. Archie is the body-builder Jack Russell running around (seriously, the strongest looking little dog I have ever seen..). Dinky is in the pouch on Missie, as his paws are not good on hard surfaces. And Jane Dotchin is the incredible woman in the hi-vis jacket leading the troupe.
Every year, early in the year, she journeys from her home near Hexham down to visit family near Buxton. At a rough guess that's probably a 200 mile journey each way, and this year apparently she was doing the journey down with snow and a lot of cold weather. This was her return journey. She camps out each night under the stars.
In autumn she does further travels, up north to Scotland. She used to do travels down to the south of England, but traffic (particularly on the small roads) has got to the point where it is no longer safe to do so, sadly.
A truly incredible woman. It was a pleasure to meet her, and her faithful companions.
