A first visit to Seaton Delaval. A really interesting property with fascinating history, currently undergoing major restoration work.
The Delaval family were Normans who came over in 1066 with William the Conqueror - they quickly established themselves in the North East, and became wealthy through activities in various industries. They also became known as pranksters: go to bed as a guest in their home and you may end up being dunked in a cold bath while asleep, etc.
The nearby church, dating from Saxon times and added to by the first Delavals, has recently undergone major work to rescue it from a condemned status: very clever works that pinned subsiding walls by inserting rods all the way down through them into the ground. The same local company Historic Property Restoration (based in North Shields) is now working on the hall, which should be completed in a couple of years.
